At The Pittie Project PNW, we strive to focus our energy and resources where we can make the greatest impact.
Our mission is to empower dogs and transform lives by rescuing and rehabilitating dogs in need, providing them with the structure, training, and confidence to thrive in their forever homes. Through community education and breaking breed stigmas, we aim to create a future where every dog has the opportunity to live their best life.
Dogs Adopted Through Our Program:
If you are contacting us about a dog adopted through our program, please note that, per your adoption contract, the dog must come back to us. We will respond as soon as possible to arrange training or return. Thank you for honoring this commitment.
Adoptions and Fostering:
If you’re interested in fostering or adopting a dog in our program, please view their complete profile on our website (Adoptable Pups) to determine if they may be a good fit for your family. You can also complete a foster/adoption application through the website.
Surrendering or Rehoming a Dog (Not Adopted Through Us)
We do not accept owner surrenders. Our efforts are dedicated to rescuing dogs from specific high-risk environments through collaborations with partner rescues. This targeted approach allows us to save as many lives as possible.
Why We Cannot Accommodate Owner Surrenders:
Local and city shelters are equipped to assist with owner surrenders and often have the necessary resources to offer immediate help. They can frequently provide support such as training recommendations and health care, which might allow your pet to remain in your home or find the appropriate placement.
Considerations for Your Pet:
We understand that deciding to rehome your pet can be extremely difficult. Staying in a familiar environment is generally less stressful for pets. If rehoming is unavoidable, we strongly recommend contacting local shelters or other rescue organizations that can accommodate your needs.
Keeping your dog is the best option for them and helps prevent wonderful, adoptable dogs from being euthanized due to overcrowding and lack of resources. Many dogs are surrendered because they lacked the training, leadership, and care needed to thrive. By working through these challenges, you can help prevent further strain on the system and save lives.
Found a Stray, Abandoned, or Abused Dog?
If you find a loose, abandoned, or abused dog, working with your local authorities and shelters is crucial. Here’s why:
Microchip Scanning and Identification: Shelters and animal control can scan for microchips, check the dog’s history, and attempt to reunite them with their owners. This is especially critical in cases of abused or abandoned dogs where owners may still be searching for them.
Proper Assessment and Care: Shelters can provide veterinary care, behavioral evaluations, and necessary treatments, including spay/neuter procedures. They can address signs of abuse or neglect and determine the dog’s best path forward.
Legal Rehoming Process: By law, stray or abandoned dogs must go through the shelter system to ensure proper documentation and compliance. Shelters hold dogs for a minimum period (usually 72 hours) to give owners a chance to come forward. Afterward, they can facilitate adoption or transfer to rescues like ours.
Safety and Protection: Engaging the right authorities protects the dog from future abuse and neglect. This process safeguards dogs while determining their best future placement, especially in cases where the dog may have suffered trauma.
While your desire to help is commendable, the shelter system exists to protect dogs and give them the best chance at a successful future. Please contact your local animal control or humane society immediately if you find a dog in need.
